Minister Confirms MoD Looking at Security Risk from Vehicles from China, with Staff Instructed to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

A defence official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the possible security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, while personnel have been told to refrain from talking about secret matters in any vehicles.

Safety Guidance for MoD Staff

In a recently aired interview on LBC, a defence minister commented on reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to talk about secret information while riding in China-made cars.

He said that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, but stressed that security is a issue in every modern vehicles.

We have a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, due to the growing risks of surveillance that exist in every single automobile, to only have those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone worried about security.

When it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Broader Security Background

The announcement follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could allow China to switch off public transport and cause disruption to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel has been shining lasers at RAF pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.

The broader defence situation highlights the importance of robust protocols and caution in every aspects of government operations, from transport usage to communication practices.
