Jair Bolsonaro detained after being deemed a risk of fleeing

Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a armed takeover in September and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

This encompassed seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his son.

His child, Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or watch it all from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's determination was the possibility of his "relocation to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a history of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the US embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 8 miles from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist American leader Donald Trump, causing him to implement a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being detained in a national police facility in the capital and will undergo a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

He was convicted of heading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, numerous his backers attacked and damaged government buildings in the capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement intervened and around 1,500 people were detained.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been incited by him whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
